There is something very romantic about a walkway. It’s as if the landscape architect or urban planner envisioned a couple walking through a garden or a courtyard or a little cobblestone part of town and so built them their own walkway.

From garden walkways, to modern, elevated, to suspended, walkways are a great architectural addition to incorporate into any outdoor setting.

Garden walkways:

A walkway in your garden is very magical. It could be as simple as a stone path running through it, or it can be a vine-covered archway. A rustic garden might just have a path clearing with a wooden fence. Garden walkways that lead to something like a bench, a fountain or a pond can give off a secret garden feel.

Modern outdoor walkways:

To make a walkway more modern all you have to do is find a way to make it more sleek. That might mean putting torches along the banister, or hanging edgy lamps above it. It might mean sprinkling coloured gravel into patterns, or having a pool of water running through its centre.

Suspended walkways:

Suspended walkways can range from the Golden Gate Bridge to a dangling wooden path in the middle of the rainforest. The latter can be a wonderfully adventurous and exciting way to explore a new place. In some modern office buildings, staircases are suspended, giving the space a free floating feel.

Glass walkways:

For a edgy feel, try standing on a glass walkway. These are especially freaky when built into one of the higher floors of a building. Toronto Canada’s CN Tower has a glass floor that people can step onto and look down 1,122 feet! For something a bit more fun and creative, try building a glass walkway in an aquarium where people can walk over the fish tanks.

It sounds cheesy but things like that happen all the time in cities like Paris. So much so that it feels as if the little romantic walkways throughout the city were built with the intention of people falling in love on them.

When designing an office building, a school or any large public outdoor space it’s always a good idea to include a covered outdoor walkway in your plans.
